Riccarton House restored GABRIELLE STUART

JOB DONE: The strengthening and restoration work is now complete, and Riccarton House has been opened to the public again. Below: Rob and Jan Dally have spent more than three years documenting the restoration and strengthening of the house.

Heritage home Riccarton House has been restored after three years hard work. More than 70 people worked on the restoration after it was damaged in the February 2011 earthquakes. Over the time it took to restore Riccarton House, Manager Rob Dally and his wife Jan documented the whole process and have just finished a book titled Riccarton House Earthquake Book. “Having worked there for seven-and-a-half years, I fell in love with the place and the people who worked on the place loved it too. It kind of has that affect on people,’’ Mr Dally said. The repairs took three years because of the strengthening

needed and the length it took using traditional techniques. Mr Dally said there were visible cracks in the floor and walls. The core structure of the house had also been damaged, the fireplace had collapsed and the ornate facades were buried under mounds of fallen bricks. Gradually as time moved on more damage was discovered in the building including internal rot and faulty wiring which insurance would not cover. Mr Dally said at the time the rebuilding seemed overwhelming yet the trust believed it was worth saving. He said about 60,000 hours of work was dedicated to the restoration and people from all over the world helped with the project.

Copies of the book can be viewed at Canterbury Museum and Christchurch City Libraries, a limited number will be available for public sale online. Part of the book, Riccarton House Earthquake Book, can be read online at www.blurb. com, and copies can be ordered through the site.

RESTORED: “Granny Catherine Deans’ bedroom was one of the worst-damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, but after years of work from skilled tradespeople like Robbie Lange (above), the room now looks almost identical to what it was before the earthquakes. Right: Cheryl Lucas of Lyttelton was called on to handcraft two chimney pots, which had to be identical to the existing ones.

Owaka pit – 236 tonnes of waste removed About 236 tonnes of waste has been removed from the controversial Owaka pit since June. Owaka Holdings has been given 12 months to remove nine thousand tonnes of burnt medium density fibre (MDF). The pit has been a source of contention for years and the issues came to a head in 2013 when the pile of MDF spontaneously caught alight and took weeks to contain. An abatement notice was issued to Owaka Holdings Ltd this year to remove all waste medium density material on site to an approved location. As of end of October about 236 tonnes had been removed. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board deputy chair Helen Broughton (inset) said residents were still concerned because they had not seen enough trucks going through. She said the community board had been reassured the MDF was being removed. “In theory it is going . . . what

supposed to be to Kate Valley Landfill. Business manager Alan Edge said the waste is being removed and is going to the Kate Valley Landfill. Transwaste Canterbury Ltd through their Kate Valley Landfill operator Canterbury Waste Services, advised it is possible the waste from the Owaka Rd site is being disposed at Kate Valley but it could not be certain. This is because the material from Owaka Rd may be going through any one of up to 12 public transfer stations in the region. Information regarding the origin of waste being disposed of through those stations is commercially sensitive to the station operators, said a spokesman. Nearby resident Julie Shivas said she believes there has been an improvement in the removal waste but she will only be happy when it has gone. “I wanted everything to be removed from there because it is suppose to be an eco-friendly site,’’ she said.

Environment Canterbury is investigating why its widespread bus changes have not resulted in an increase in patronage. Previously we asked readers what they thought of local public transport and they responded. Wayne Visser: I live in Karnak Cres, Russley, and worked for 12 years at Tait Communications in Wairakei Rd, Burnside. I have been a big loser in the changes made last December. I used to have the 21 Ilam terminus at one end of my street and that was my main transport into town. That service was removed. I had the 24 close to the other end of my street and that was removed. I also had the 84 about 10 minutes walk away in Bentley St, and that was removed and replaced by the 140. The replacement 130 for the 24 is a somewhat convoluted route. It is the only way of getting to Westfield, but makes a dog’s dinner out of getting there, or even beyond to the Hub Hornby. I also lost out at work. I had the No 3 and Comet going past work to the airport and was able to leave my car at work while catching either bus to the airport for a weekend away. The replacement 125 was rerouted away from work and the Purple Line terminates at Shef-

field Cres. Therefore, there is no longer any service going past work to the airport. Alternative Purple buses turn into Memorial Ave, to go to the airport. Going to work from home used to entail taking the 24 to Avonhead mall and changing to the three to Sheffield Cres. This generally worked okay unless the three was running early. It wasn’t supposed to because Avonhead is a timing point, but that was not always observed by drivers. The current arrangement or taking the 130 and changing to the Purple Line works in theory, but if I miss the bus heading to work then the next one goes to the airport because the purple buses alternate. Also, there is no bus top at the Avonhead mall for Merrin St buses travelling east, but there is for west-bound buses. In addition, although the 125 travels through the roundabout at Aps-

ley, Staveley, Cutts and Woodbury, there are no bus stops on this route between Bentley St and Withells Rd. It is a serious impediment to me using this service. From my house it is a 12 minute walk to catch the purple bus in Maidstone Rd. Not so good in the rain. I understand what Environment Canterbury is trying to achieve, but the changes have not helped me in any way. Cliff Shepherd: I have just read the moaning letters in the Western News about our transport system and wonder whether these people are living on another planet. As a gold card holder and long time cyclist, used to cycling to work, all weathers, summer and winter, I had not used public transport for 45 years. I cannot speak more highly of the service we receive. The driving skills and interpersonal

skills of the drivers cannot be faulted, especially in the state our roads are in. A bus service is not a taxi service which it appears these people want, so let them pay the extra. I change my bus to get to work and visit Burwood Hospital every second week and the service is excellent with most waiting times no more than seven minutes. Head injuries prevent me from cycling and I never thought I’d become a public transport user, but I have been pleasantly surprised and impressed with the service we receive. Neil David Osborne: Being an ex-bus driver I will say the main problem is that the drivers are not consulted. Someone sitting in an office says “well I think this should work’’ . Or “no those customers can just wait an hour for transfer’’. A good service always has a good driver and a few bad ones. My bus when I was with Leopard was 81 Lincoln. Well that’s now 80 and misses all the schools where I would have my first trip jammed with kids. It misses out those along Main South Rd. And the likes of St Thomas and Villa Maria. You usually see that regular customers would find the driver they prefer and wouldn’t go with another. Some children refused to go with a grumpy

driver and would wait. I also worked at the Red Bus company for six months but after the earthquakes, I kept getting sick with flus. Some routes have multiple buses and it’s extremely hard for me to figure out why change what was a wonderful system. To have to get three to six buses to do what you used to do on one each way. Major routes should have stayed the same. Like 3 Sumner, Metro Star, 88 Rollerston and 81 Lincoln. These mainstay routes should have then had services flowing from designated sites. Most drivers are friendly and just a few spoil it. But some drivers should not be drivers due to their attitude. Some bus drivers have a bad attitude and don’t want to help helpless people.

DRESS UP YOUR LETTER BOX The Halswell Community Project is planning its Christmas decoration competition. There will be prizes for the best decorated letter box, but people can decorate trees or bicycles as well. Trees have to be easily visible from the road, and bicycles must be ridden around Halswell. Email in photos of these decorations to the community project, during the week beginning December 14 and judging will be completed the following week. MOUNTAIN BIKE TRACK A new section of mountain bike track has opened in the Pine Forest next to the Halswell Quarry dog park area. The track, which was opened by Christchurch Singletrack Club with the help of Fulton Hogan, which is called Lower Deviation, can be accessed by either riding up C2 and down Deviation, or up the first section of Crocodile Track. The new track is one-way and only for riding. $500 FOR THE HAGUE TRIP Middleton Grange School student Evangeline Maffey has been granted $500 to go towards her trip to The Hague. She will represent New Zealand at The Hague International Model United Nations in January and February.

FUNDING REQUESTS Hei Hei resident Shenaegh Hayden and Halswell resident Brittany France have both applied for funding to go towards the cost of attending the Hip Hop Dance Unite World Championships in Martinique, France, this week. The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board will decide whether to grant $500 to each dancer at its meeting tomorrow. INTERSECTION SUBMISSIONS City council is pouring over submissions regarding proposed Main South Rd and Carmen Rd intersection changes. The alterations are to make the intersection safer. About 800 property owners, businesses and other interested parties had leaflets distributed. About 324 submissions were received. An evaluation report is expected soon from council staff. WASTEWATER REPAIRS Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team will be replacing earthquake damaged sewer pipes between 12 and 38 Waiwetu St. The work will begin from November 30 through to December 18. One lane of Waiwetu St will be closed and a priority give-way system will be put in place. The crew will be on break over the Christmas holidays before returning to work on January 5.

Work in science communications gets national recognition

A university professor from Halswell has been recognised nationally for exceptional communication in science. Canterbury University Professor of Marine Science David Schiel has been awarded the New Zealand Science Communicator of the Year award. The medal was shared between Prof Schiel and Chairman of Coastal Science Professor Battershill at the University of Waikato. The science communicator medal was awarded to practicing scientists for excellence in communicating science to the public or any area of science and technology. Prof Schiel said it was a great honour to receive the award. “Professor Battershill and I were honoured to play our role in communicating the science relating to environment effects.’’ Prof Schiel played a large role in communicating with the public after the disastorous oil spill from the MV Rena ship in Tauranga on October 5, 2011.

This was after the Rena struck the Astrolabe reef splitting the ship in half. He said following the oil spill, the effects of the Rena wreck are still being dealt with as there is still contamination on the Astrolabe reef today. The MV Rena incident was

described by Hon Dr Nick Smith as one of greatest disasters in New Zealand history. The incident affected habitat, kai moana, tourism, fishing and recreation. During this time of environmental destruction, Profs Schiel and Battershill gave more than 100 public speeches and interviews to the news media. “We spoke at public houses and maraes up and down the Bay of Plenty.’’ Prof Schiel said he was checking the projections of the Rena operational command centre before speaking to the public. Professor Schiel’s work with the environment has been recognised nationally and internationally. Last year Prof Schiel was named a Fellow of Royal Society of New Zealand. He has also received an international award at a conference in Australia for lifelong service to marine science. Having always had an interest in science, ProfSchiel has also worked in fisheries and aqua culture.

Heading to Christchurch Hospital?

Plan your trip. Canterbury DHB’s Park & Ride service, running between the Metro/Brewery car park and Christchurch Hospital, has carried more than 200,000 passengers since it was set up in late October 2014. From 1 December 2015 it will run from a new location at Deans Avenue (the old Sale Yards). There’s plenty of parking and the cost of parking is $5 a day. Journey times on the free shuttle will be around 15 minutes, similar to the existing shuttle, and it will run to the current timetable 7 am to 8.30 pm, 7 days a week.

Carl Seaward

Xmas light show bigger and Just out of Hornby, the city’s most dazzling Christmas show was lit up on Saturday. Georgia O’Connor-Harding spoke to Carl Seaward on why he is not a fan of Christmas, how he has to listen to the same song for 160 hours and what inspired this year’s theme of trains

BRIGHT LIGHTS: Carl Seaward with wife Maureen at one of their many popular shows.

Hi Carl, thank you for speaking with me. How long have you been running the Christmas Light Show for? It is the eighth year we have done Christmas lights. When we started we only had a couple of thousand lights. Now we think we have got about 600,000 lights. We’ve lost count. Wow, 600,000 lights! I take it you use a lot of power. It is not a huge amount of power because most of the lights are LED and they don’t use a lot of power. Our search lights probably use up more power than what the actual light show does. Has the light scene developed a lot since when you first started? Absolutely. Every year it goes through transformation where we change the theme, change the displays and build new light structures. We come up with new ideas and play different music. Every year is a new experience.

Check your letterbox this weekend for your Summer events guide

That is so exciting. Whose idea was it to put on such a show? Originally it started with my wife Maureen. Back in the early days she started collecting soft toy Santa bears. That collection grew to animated Christmas characters and we ended up putting up a couple of thousand lights. From there it has just kept on growing. Do you also have a lot of music involved with the show? Yes we do. It is actually a light show rather than a display. All the lights are synchronised with music. I spend most of the year programming it. I programme the lights into the songs and we do stuff from AC/DC, Dooby brothers to Beethoven. Do you like to mix the traditional Christmas scene with more modern culture? Yes, absolutely. We don’t do Christmas carols. Basically it is a live show experience so you don’t come out here expecting to listen

to Christmas carols because that doesn’t happen. Why is it best not to have Christmas carols? To synchronise one song with the light show it takes me 160 hours on average. That is 160 hours I am listening to that piece of music and there is no way I am going to listen to 160 x nine (because we have nine songs) hours of Christmas carols. So I basically select music that is popular but music I enjoy. Are you a big fan of Christmas? No, my wife and I are a big fan of meeting people. The whole month we are running it for, we spend outside talking with people and getting feedback from those who have come out and experienced the lights. It is magic and it has become addictive. Tell me about the theme for this year. This year for the theme we have gone with trains. Last year we did a white Christmas theme with a big snowman and it was snowing between songs where as this year, we have set up trains everywhere amongst the displays. We have created a whole new experience which should be quite popular.

brighter each year LIT UP: One of the many light show displays at 650 Shands Rd.

What would you say has been the most exciting theme in previous years? Probably the most popular theme was actually a Pirates of the Caribbean display we had for Halloween. It was popular with the kids. We incorporate the Halloween display in amongst with our whole Christmas show. Personally I would say this year is the best show we’ve put together. Now I have to ask, have there been any issues with neighbours due to the music and lights? No, we have no issues with neighbours. Our closest neighbour is about 200m away. But we have to do traffic control

because last year more than 33,000 people came through. So we have traffic control on Shands Rd. Hundreds of road cones get put out and the speed gets reduced from 80km/h to 30km/h. This is every night from November 28 just to make things safer. Was it a large process getting these procedures put in place? Yes, we had to get a resource consent and submit a traffic plan. We have to get people to monitor the traffic and get the signage. It was a huge expense and undertaking but we are fortunate Fulton Hogan helped us out there. They gave us a bit of sponsorship and supply the

They meet on the second Wednesday of each month in the Upper Riccarton Library from 7-9pm. Members of the group are experienced researchers who can help beginners get started on their exploration of their family story. The society has their own small library of reference books. Most months there is a guest speaker who will talk on topics of interest. The society also runs research nights in the library where members learn about using programs available on the web. There is also a Rover section for 18 to 26-year-olds. Each section runs its own programme and usually runs at least one camp per term. Training and specialised camps are available throughout the year. Highlights for members include the opportunity to attend national and international camps. signage and cones. And it is all set up on 650 Shands Rd? Yes, and we do a $5 entry charge per person which helps with Maureen (my wife’s) treatment and helps fund the show. Would you be able to tell me a bit about your wife? My wife suffers from Lyme disease which is caused by an infected tick. My wife is now in a wheelchair. She can’t do anything of what she used to do. She used to do the artwork and painting around here. She now takes on a supervisory role. We get friends that come out and set up the display rooms for her. Your wife is a key role to the light show? She basically tells people of which characters she wants and where she wants them because she knows what she has got of her massive collection. I just focus on building the light show. Thank you Carl, all the best for your light show. The Christmas Light Show will be running from 8.30pmmidnight everyday from November 28 through to December 30 on 650 Shands Rd.

WESTERN NEWS REJUVINATION: Thumbs up for Villa Maria College after planting and watering more than 360 trees on _____

WORKING BEE: Students enjoy a day helping revive a burnt-out farm after suffering a shelter-belt fire earlier this year.

Villa girls raise $3k plus for school charity

ACHIEVEMENT: Hornby Primary School pupils received special awards for achievement in different areas throughout the school last week. These awards included excellence in learning, developing in swimming, showing initiative and perseverance in work. They were – Connor Ellis, Tyrone Moana, Malama Okusi, Ryan Priest, Katene Bennett, Jackson Mills, Jessica Baker, Quaid Flowers, Melena Moala, Gabbie Reid, Rory Sheard, Courtney Graham, Samantha Whitcombe, Lyan De Guzman, Aeirone Felipe, Kaydin Jefferies and Maretino Kaloudau.

Villa Maria College’s junior students have lended a helping hand around the community as part of a “Service Working Day’’. The day required year 7 to 10 students to find a job and earn money for the school’s charity of choice, Caritas, the Social Justice Arm of the Catholic Church. From the working day, students raised more than $3000 for Caritas. A range of work was completed around the homes of students’ friends, relatives and

workplaces as well as a group went out on the O’Rielly’s farm based in the Selwyn district. The group of students planted, staked and watered 360 trees after the farm suffered from extensive damage due to a shelterbelt fire from earlier this year. “We have had great feedback, the students enjoyed working for the cause. It was a great day,’’ Villa Maria High School Development Officer Judi Wilson said. The school shares a catholic

connection with the charity Caritas. However, Wilson said they wanted to raise money for the charity because it is focusing on the Philippines due to a number of natural disasters the country has endured in the past two years including the Mayon eruption and Typhoon Haiyan. “It was a fantastic day with Villa girls enthusiastically embracing the service day challenge and living out our Mercy values, I was really proud of them,” principal Deborah Brosnahan said.

Avonhead Primary to Development award bring High School Musical for Hornby student The Wildcats from High School Musical will be roaring onto stage at Avonhead Primary School. Avonhead year 7 and 8 pupils will be putting on an end-ofyear show to remember as the school’s version of High School Musical takes the stage. Around 129 pupils have been working hard to prepare for the show. The leading high school couple of Gabriella Montenz and Troy Bolton will be played by senior pupils Eliza McIntosh and Will Mason. And in the role everyone loves to hate, Sharpay Evans will be played by Julia Cotton. Her reluctant brother Ryan Evans will be portrayed by Stephen Mosa’ati. Audiences can expect to be singing along to the show’s favorite songs including Break-

Other pupils involved are responsible for making the show tick include stage hands, set, props, sound and lighting. Teachers in charge of the production include Darelle Busfield, Bruce Rodger, Karalee Moore and Sandie Gamperle from the Senior HQ year 7/8 team. Mrs Busfield said the school chose High School Musical

Medbury School have won their first national primary schools cricket title. The competition was held out at Lincoln from November 2325 and it all came down to the final day to determine who would take home the title. After losing to Kings School earlier in the week, Medbury needed Kings to lose their final match against Raroa Normal Intermediate School to have a chance at winning.

RUNNERS-UP: Riccarton High School girls have finished second at the South Island Secondary Schools junior volleyball tournament. The team lost in a close final to Otago Girls’ High School going down two sets to one. Back row (from left) – Courtney Dyson, Ruby Mangai-Reiri, Gemma Saunders, Maisie Cropley, Reese Mangai-Reiri and Roger Bleyendaal (coach). Front row – Jordan Hollinshead, Mia Jenkins, Jenny Winward and Kelsey Butland.

In their final game Huntly School won the toss and put Medbury in to bat but coach Owen Foster said it didn’t bother the boys. “We would have planned to bat first if we won the toss so it wasn’t a problem,” he said. Medbury finished the innings on 120 runs, with captain Zac May top scoring with 41 from 49 balls. Foster said the team’s depth and ability to bounce back after Monday’s loss was a contributing factor to their win.

“We haven’t had to rely on one or two players which helped see us through. “They were disappointed to lose to Kings on Monday. Didn’t feel like they played their best cricket, but showed plenty of character and they were confident they could win this final game,” he said. Kings were set 98 runs for victory by Raroa but came up six runs short. It is the first time a Christchurch school has won the cup since 2009.

Start getting better now with these basic tips: POSTURE • Keep your head straight Look straight ahead of you, about 30-40 metres out in front and avoid looking down at your feet. Looking down will create tension in your neck and shoulders. • Shoulders back and down Your shoulders should be back and down not up by your ears. Keep them relaxed and avoid tensing them. Don’t hunch over as this restricts breathing. • Keep your elbows at 90 degrees Your elbows should be bent at a 90 degree angle. Try to swing your arms forward and back, not across your body. This arm movement helps to propel you forward. Your hands should be relaxed, but don’t let them flop. Tight hands can cause tension all the way up to the back and shoulders. • Solid core Focus on keeping your core (trunk)

firm, though not rigid, and straight and your hips and shoulders level and relaxed. Keeping this position in your hips can help prevent low back and hip pain. FOOT STRIKE AND LEG POSITION • Don’t strike the ground too heavily Good running is light and quiet. You should land in the middle of your foot with a slightly bent knee. Whatever your weight, your feet should not slap loudly as they hit the ground. Light steps are more efficient and cause less stress to the body and landing on the middle of your foot is the safest way to land for most recreational runners. That’s the basics but there’s always more we can do to help. Try these: RUNFIT – The technical edge Muscle People Physiotherapy & YMCA gym have a running group in Hagley Park – RunFit, led by a Physiotherapist and Canterbury competitive runner, and a Personal Trainer from the YMCA gym. RunFit focuses on running technique which is vital to improving speed, reducing injuries and making running more enjoyable for both regular runners and the beginner. RunFit is ideal for regular runners who are looking to challenge themselves, as well as the beginning runner who wants to start with good technique and the guidance of professionals.

f you’re looking for a great house and a great buy, then look no further. Perfect for both young executives and maybe even retirees, you can take confidence in the TC2 land and freehold title of 450m2. The house I would describe as a “sun trap” and features three double bedrooms and two bathrooms, with en suite and walk-in robe off the master. There are two living areas to enjoy, opening onto a private outdoor entertaining area – great for the summer barbecues. Add to this the double internal access garage and solid brick construction, this great home should

tick all the boxes on your list. Once again, don’t forget that our vendors have purchased and need this sold yesterday! Open Home dates: Saturday, November 28, 1pm to 1.30pm; Sunday, November 29, 1pm to 1.30pm; Saturday, December 5, 1pm to 1.30pm; and Sunday, December 6, 1pm to 1.30pm. See you at the open home or before for a private viewing, contact Cameron Bailey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or mobile 027 555 7079.

TRIBUTE TO PROMINENT LEADING JAZZMEN

Two legends of the Christchurch Big Band scene, Doug Kelly and Doug Caldwell, will be celebrated in a tribute concert to their music in the best way possible. The Garden City Big Band will play original music and arrangements by the two Dougs from an era when swing music and big band jazz were celebrated on the airwaves and the dance halls of New Zealand. Now both over 80 years old, Doug Kelly and Doug Caldwell, along with musical director Lana Law have worked with the Garden City Big Band to bring their music to life. Originals like 'Wakatipu Environs', 'Thanks Bill' and 'Douglas Delight' sit along tasty workings of well known songs 'Days of Wine and Roses','Scrapple from the Apple', and even 'Jeepers Creepers'. Established Jazz Diva and Doug Kelly's granddaughter, Kate Taylor joins the band on vocals. 4pm Sunday 6th December | Charles Luney Auditorium, St Margaret's College.
